ECO SCHOOLS
"Eco Schools is an international initiative designed to encourage whole-school action for the environment. It is an environmental management tool, learning resource and recognised award scheme.
We are now one of over 3,000 schools registered with the Eco Schools programme in Scotland, and over 17% of these schools have attained the highest award level - the Green Flag."

Our Eco Schools trip to Edinburgh - Part 1 |
Eight schools from throughout Scotland were invited to provide a 'showcase' of Enterprise activities at a national conference in Edinburgh on Wednesday 27th February 2008. We were the only school representing the Primary sector. After discussing a possible focus with staff and class 7 pupils it was decided that our Eco Schools initiative would best represent our work in enterprise. The 'showcase' took the form of visual displays and PowerPoint presentations representing the work of all classes. The 7 Eco Committee members took responsibility for coordinating this work and presenting their 'showcase' to the puplic. This was a tremendous opportunity for these children from classes 4-7 who were in Edinburgh for 2 days with an all expenses paid overnight stay in the Sheraton Hotel. |

We have achieved The Silver Award |
|
We were delighted to hear that we had attained the Silver Award in June 2007. We were also lucky enough to have the privilege of a visit from Maureen Watt, Minister for Schools and Skills. Whilst Maureen was here she presented the Award to the Eco Schools Committee. |
Eco schools Committee (written by the committee themselves)
Dounby School put together an Eco Schools committee. They interviewed pupils which were interested in being on the committee. The lucky ones chosen were Kerry Stanger, Laura Wilson, Aidan Morrison, Charys Harvey, Alasdair Flett, Helen Flett and Kelsey Harvey.
On Wednesday 28th March 2007 the Eco Committee arranged for an Open Day to be held. The stalls were Active Schools which was the best all together, Fly Tipping, Wind Energy and Wave Power.
We did evaluation sheets to find out who the pupils thought was the best.

 |
Our Eco Schools committee must be praised for organising a highly successful open day on Wednesday the 28th March 2007. There were several participants from outside the school which included Scottish Natural Heritage, RSPB, Keep Orkney Warm, Active Schools, Orkney Zero Waste and Orkney Sustainable Energy. |
|
| After the open day the whole school assembled to talk about what we'd learnt. The question was ‘How do we become an Eco School?' We decided to select a topic for each class by picking names out of a hat. All the classes made mind maps of different topics. They worked on this topic throughout the year. They used the maps to plan out what they were going to do.
